Salted Caramel cupcake
I’ll admit that I was skeptical about Georgetown Cupcake until a few days ago. My first experience with one of their cupcakes was at a meeting for a student org which I was bribed to go to because they advertised there would be free cupcakes. I got a seasonal fall apple cinnamon flavor, and I just wasn’t a fan of the flavor. I’ve also been too afraid to actually go to the store itself and try a flavor that I might like because literally every time I walk by this shop, there is a line out the door. This is thanks to the shop’s reality show on TLC, DC Cupcakes.

One Thursday evening I was strolling through Georgetown with a friend from home and there was no line. It was surreal. So I went in and ordered a salted caramel cupcake ($2.75). To my surprise, it was amazing! I didn’t think Georgetown Cupcake would live up to the hype because it’s a franchise now (with locations in cities across the country), and I think products from chains taste more manufactured and less homemade.
Georgetown Cupcake describes its Salted Caramel cupcake as a “caramel cupcake with a salted caramel-infused buttercream frosting topped with a caramel drizzle.” As with all cupcakes, I think hitting the right balance between the cake and the frosting is essential, and Georgetown Cupcake did just that. The cake part was moist and the frosting was rich, but not artificial-tasting, as was the case with some of my past experiences. Another thing to note is that these cupcakes are smaller than those at baked & wired, so they don’t require a fork to eat!

Red Velvet cupcake
I didn’t try the red velvet cupcake, but my friend did and she recommends it. It’s their most popular cupcake.
Georgetown Cupcake is worth the hype, but I personally wouldn’t want to wait in their line on a busy day when baked & wired and Sprinkles are down the street. If you don’t mind waiting, however, you could be rewarded with a free cupcake!! Georgetown Cupcake has a FREE secret (not on the menu) flavor every day that you can find out about if you like their Facebook page. There are 100 per location, 1 per customer. Just order the flavor by name and get it for free!
